ALP MONTHLY MEETING REPORT
by James Kevin Ty
|Last February 4, the Astronomical League of
the Philippines held their monthly meeting at the Manila Planetarium. Members who
were present that day were James Kevin Ty, Allen Yu, Jett Aguilar, Melchor Pilones , Bele
Pabunan, Peter Benedict Tubalinal , Michelle Lampa , Kristy Anne Abello,
Rafael Lunar, Angie Tan, Melisa Bata, Alexander Loinaz, Maximo Sacro, Dennis Llante
and his girlfriend Kristine Velasco , Rich Pijuan and Kurt , Jomar Lacson, Jonathan
Alcartado ,Tommy Tan and new member Sheri Mae Domingo.
The initial plan for a solar observation was cancelled because of cloudy weather that afternoon. The meeting proper started at around 3:00pm with ALP president James Kevin Ty asking members to make a short introduction to each other as ALP got a new member in Sheri Mae Domingo so she can more or less recognize the members of the society who were present that afternoon.
Afterwards, ALP Special Event coordinator and Treasurer Allen Yu discussed ALP preparation for the upcoming National Astronomy Week (NAW) 2007 which will be celebrated between February 18 to 24. Since PAGASA havent come up with this year's NAW theme yet , ALP had decided to use their own theme as NAW is just around the corner already. Upon several suggested themes, the members had decided to have this year's theme as "Shaping the Future of Philippine Astronomy." (Latest Update: PAGASA finally come up with their theme which is "NAW: A Countdown to the International Year of Astronomy 2009." Since ALP NAW theme is almost in line with that of PAGASA's, ALP has decided to stick to their original theme as it was already finalized last Sunday and PAGASA coming up with their theme just this February 6.)
Among the finalized activity for the opening day at Planetarium will be an Astrophoto exhibit, Astro Garage Sale, and Stargazing Session at the Baywalk. Midway on the NAW week, ALP will also have a public stargazing session at the Science Centrum in Marikina and lastly, another public stargazing session again at the Baywalk on the 24th to conclude this year's celebration of NAW.
The proposed Astrophoto Exhibit will feature the astronomical images taken by members of the society as well as some highlights on the history of ALP over the years. As for the Astro Garage Sale, it will be an opportunity for members of the society to dispose of their astro-related items such as telescopes, accesories, books, novelties, etc.
The meeting ended at around 5:30pm.
