ALP STARGAZING SESSION AT CALIRAYA , LAGUNA

March 25, 2006

by Brian Davis

Together with my son Alexander we met the group at the shell station on SSH and fought slow drivers all the way to the resort.

Arriving just at sundown we could see that previous arrivals had their scopes up. We proceeded to quickly eat and get set up. I was anxious because this was the first time at a dark sky site!

I was able to polar align my Celestron C8S GT for the first time and this took only 5 minutes and we were off and viewing with M42 as the first target, before it was to set behind the trees. From here we just went on an object tour throughout the night, M51 was impressive with both core visible, M104 with its dark lane was nice, Omega Centauri was awesome with the bino-viewers as were other clusters, M63 was plainly visible and as the night wore on M57 looked nice but this is when the clouds were coming in.

I imaged only 2 objects, Omega Centauri via eyepiece projection using my Sony DSC-V3 and my modified 40mm E-Lux eyepiece. 7 frames at 25-30 seconds like this:

We then turned our attention to Jupiter with the Celestron Neximage and took 3 shots with the best looking like this:

Overall we had a great time and very much enjoyed the company as much as we did the sky. We look forward to the next gathering and I hope for clear skies.
